The problem

People who document or share their screen juggle several tools. The built-in Windows capture is fast but barely annotates, and recording, scrolling capture, redaction and step guides each tend to be a separate app. Some destinations, like AI coding terminals, accept a file path but not a pasted image.

  1. 01

Annotation that keeps up with capture

  2. 02

    Sensitive data in screenshots

  3. 03

Recording and editing in one place

  4. 04

Content that hover or scroll hides

  5. 05

    Where screenshots end up

The solution

One Rust executable built on Windows' own engines for video, audio, text recognition and encryption. Redaction runs on the device, uploads go only to the user's own storage, and licence keys are checked offline, so there is no server or account.

Frozen-screen capture

The whole desktop is frozen before selection, so menus, tooltips and hover states are captured as they looked, with a magnifier for exact edges.

One-click on-device redaction

Text recognition and face detection find emails, keys, card numbers, phone numbers, IPs and faces, and blur them without uploading anything.

Screen recording with overlays

MP4 recording with system audio and mic, a webcam bubble, and click and shortcut overlays. The controls never appear in the video.

Video editor

Trim, cut, speed up, zoom in and add callouts with a live preview, then export MP4 or an optimised GIF.

Scrolling capture for any pane

Scrolls a chosen pane and stitches frames into one image, ignoring scrollbars and keeping sticky headers and footers once.

Searchable history and guides

Find screenshots by the text inside them, and turn captures into step-by-step guides exported to Markdown or PDF.

How it works

The app lives in the tray. A hotkey freezes the screen for a region, window or full-screen capture, and an editor adds annotations, one-click redaction and a beautified background, then copies the image or its file path, or uploads it. Another hotkey records the screen with audio and a webcam, and a built-in editor trims and exports MP4 or GIF.

Key decisions

Windows engines instead of bundled libraries

Chose Media Foundation, WASAPI, the built-in OCR and face detection, and DPAPI over Shipping FFmpeg, an OCR engine or ML models

A small single executable with no model downloads, and text recognition and redaction never leave the machine.

Freeze the screen before selecting

Chose One capture of the whole desktop, shown dimmed, with stills cropped from it over A live overlay that captures after selection

Menus, tooltips and hover states disappear when focus changes. Freezing first captures them exactly as they looked.

Plain Win32 for the overlay, egui for windows

Chose GDI for the capture overlay and live chrome, egui for the editor, settings and video editor over One UI toolkit for everything

Window transparency in the UI toolkit had backend-dependent bugs, and the overlay is simple enough that plain GDI is more reliable and less code.

Offline licence keys

Chose Ed25519-signed keys verified against an embedded public key over A hosted activation server with device limits

A one-time-purchase tool with no server to run. The trade-off, no device limits, is written in the code and kept under review.

One command loop for the tray app

Chose The tray window only queues commands, and the main loop runs them one at a time over Concurrent handlers per hotkey

Overlays, the editor and recording each run nested message loops, so queueing keeps the flow sequential and free of re-entrancy bugs.

Security and compliance controlsSecurity & Access
Controls that support compliance work: on-device OCR and redaction, DPAPI-encrypted secrets, shortcut-only keystroke overlays, safe retention pruning and signed binaries.
Message queuesArchitecture · Partial
The recorder runs producer and consumer threads: capture and audio sources feed one encoder thread that alone owns the video writer, all on one pause-aware clock.
Deployment pipelineEngineering & Delivery
A version tag builds, tests, signs the executable, builds a per-user installer, signs it and creates a draft release.
PermissionsSecurity & Access
Least privilege on both sides: Google Drive access limited to files the app created, and an installer that needs no admin rights.
